Work Experience

Work Experience dates: Monday 22nd January – Friday 9th February 2018.
Work experience is a key aspect of a pupil’s time at Glenwood School. It is offered to all pupils in Year 11 who will undertake a three week placement. This is very unusual as most schools have two or even just one week for pupils to experience the world of work. Although not ideal for some types of work, we always have our placements in January and February to ensure we do not clash with the large secondary schools and therefore have a greater selection of quality placements.
We work closely with the Portsmouth & SE Hants Education Business Partnership who carry out the health and safety checks to ensure the business has the correct insurance etc. At the end of the placement, it may be possible to continue on a one-day-week basis depending on whether the employer can accommodate the pupil and the curriculum commitments of the pupil e.g. GCSE revision and exams.
At Glenwood School we believe that by offering three weeks in the workplace pupils have the opportunity to show what they are capable of achieving. This is confirmed by many positive comments from employers who feel the extra time allows the pupils to ‘shine’. We also regularly receive outstanding ‘Employer Reports’ and occasionally, some pupils are offered part-time employment as a result of their placement. For many pupils, the placement also helps confirm they have made the correct choice about their college course e.g. mechanics, child-care, animal care, art & design etc.
Preparation for the workplace includes health and safety awareness, including risk assessments and fire safety, a range of scenarios e.g. ‘What would you do if….? or ‘What would you say if …?’ etc, what the employer expects of the pupil and what the pupil should expect of the workplace. We also have outside speakers including the Police or Community Safety Officers, representatives from MENCAP and a Parents’ Meeting at the October Parents’ Evening.
Pupils are closely monitored during the placement with visits by school staff and Hampshire Futures (formerly Connexions). Issues do arise but these are usually minor and easily resolved.
There are several ‘regular’ placements e.g. numerous Co-op stores, particularly Emsworth Co-op also Waitrose, Wilkinson and Sue Ryder whilst others are used more infrequently or just once or twice depending on pupils’ interests and where they live. At the end of ther placement, pupils receive the Employer’s Report and the Work Experience Certificate for their Record of Achievement. To emphasise the importance of work experience the Work Experience Certificate is presented to pupils on their last day by one of our employers.
The list below shows the wide range of business links the school has developed over the years.  We would like to thank these businesses who have offered quality placements, often on a regular basis, and without whom, we would not have a work experience programme.
